Appliances aren't like a broken chair you can just set on the curb. Many contain materials that need to be handled a specific way, which is why they're treated differently from general junk.
Refrigerators, freezers, and some air conditioning units contain refrigerants that need to be safely recovered rather than released, which regular trash pickup isn't set up to handle. Other appliances contain components that are better recycled than sent straight to a landfill.
In practice, it means old appliances usually need to go through a specific disposal or recycling process rather than regular curbside pickup. This isn't something you need to manage yourself — when we remove an appliance, we make sure it's taken to a facility equipped to handle it properly.
If you're replacing several appliances during a kitchen or laundry room remodel, it's usually more efficient to have them all removed in a single visit rather than dealing with each one separately as new ones arrive.
